Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins this weekend. People adjust their clocks to make better use of daylight during the longer days of spring and summer.

Scripture teaches the importance of understanding the times and seasons, which can be related to the seasonal changes marked by Daylight Saving Time. In the Book of Ecclesiastes, we read, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). This verse reminds us that time, and the way we manage it, is part of God’s ordained order.

In spring, as the days grow longer and the world comes alive with new growth, there is a sense of renewal and rebirth. The Bible speaks of new beginnings, just as the changing of seasons marks a new chapter in our lives. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, it says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” The transition into spring and the changing of clocks can be a symbol of spiritual renewal, where we are reminded to shed old ways and embrace the new, much like the earth sheds its winter coat to embrace the warmth of new life.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of being aware of time and using it wisely. In Ephesians 5:15-16, it says, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” Though DST may not be a biblical command, the principle of using time wisely, whether in the light of day or the darkness of night, is a biblical value that encourages us to live intentionally and purposefully.

Genesis 2:23-24

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
