Family Still Matters – New Summer Sermon Series

The Importance of Rest

Rest is not merely a physical necessity but a spiritual principle rooted in God’s design for our well-being. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we can easily overlook the significance of rest. Yet, in the Bible, we see that God Himself rested on the seventh day after creating the heavens and the earth (Genesis 2:2). This act of rest was not due to fatigue but as a model for us to follow, emphasizing the importance of rest as a rhythm of life. Jesus also recognized the need for rest, encouraging His disciples to come aside and rest a while after their ministry (Mark 6:31). This demonstrates that rest is essential for rejuvenation and to maintain a healthy balance in life.

Beyond physical rest, the Bible speaks of a deeper rest for our souls found in Christ. Jesus invites us, saying, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). This rest is not merely the absence of work but a state of peace and restoration found in Him. Psalm 23:2-3 paints a beautiful picture of God as our Shepherd who leads us beside still waters and restores our souls. This spiritual rest involves trusting in God’s provision and care, knowing that He sustains us through all circumstances. Therefore, as Christians, embracing both physical and spiritual rest is crucial not only for our health but also for our spiritual growth and relationship with God.

July Memory Verses – Revelation 12:10-11

10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
